Lagos State former Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has won the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election with 1,271 votes.

23 aspirants initially bought forms to compete in the party Presidential primary but nine of them voluntarily stepped down after signing the withdrawal form.

Eventually, 14 participated in the primary election that lasted for almost two days.

From the results announced

David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi State secured 38 votes

Pastor Tunde Bakare got zero vote

Senator Ahmed Rufai Sani- four votes

Rotimi Amaechi- 315

Vice-President Professor Yemi Osinbajo-235 votes.

Earlier in the convention, about half a dozen contestants, including Former Niger Delta Affairs Minister Godswill Akpabio and Jigawa State Governor Baderu withdrew from the race and threw their weight behind Asiwaju Tinubu.

Another presidential hopeful, Nicholas Felix, a US-based pastor, also stepped down and declared his support for Vice-President Osinbajo.

He started this while addressing a crowd of APC faithful comprising party leaders, delegates, and other supporters at the Eagles Square, the venue of the presidential convention in the nation’s capital.

Meanwhile, another presidential hopeful of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has secured the support of some of his co-aspirants vying for the party’s sole ticket.

As the event progressed in earnest on Tuesday night, the aspirants took turns to announce that they were stepping down for the two times former Lagos State governor.

First of the co-contenders to announce his withdrawal from the race and declare his support for Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu was former Niger Delta minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Five other aspirants followed suit, mounting the podium to throw their weight behind Tinubu.

They are: former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa; and Senator Ajayi Boroffice.

Earlier, President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at Eagles Square, the venue of the APC Special Convention and presidential primary in Abuja.

The arrival of the President signaled the kick-off of the presidential primary.

According to channelstv, the President was ushered into the arena with a resounding ensemble by the Guards Brigade, after which the exercise commenced in full bloom.

Other media reports confirmed that for several hours, delegates, party chieftains, aspirants, and guests waited for the commencement of the primary election – an exercise that has been encased in so much intrigue and controversy.

On hand to welcome President Buhari were the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), as well as other leaders of the party, reports have said.

After the arrival of President Buhari, the 2022 APC Special Convention officially opened with addresses by the Chairman Planning Committee, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, and the National Chairman of the Party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

Chairman, Election Planning Committee, APC Convention, Governor Uzodimma called the APC a party “that will always be guided by the rule of law”.

According to the party’s National Chairman, Senator Adamu, “Things are not falling apart in APC. Things are holding up.’

“We,” he went on, “are united and are speaking with one voice.”

APC chieftain, Bola Tinubu, said his success as Lagos State governor has put him in poll position as the most qualified aspirant to succeed President Buhari in 2023.

President Buhari, in last-minute consultations, met on Tuesday with various chieftains and stakeholders within the party, including Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, who, incidentally, was the only one of the 14 APC northern governors to have opted out of an earlier meeting with the President.

Northern governors, led by Simon Lalong of Plateau State, had agreed that the presidency should be zoned to the south, although the decision did not go down well with everyone.

Consultations were said to be ongoing behind the scenes among various aspirants and leaders of the party.

The much-anticipated Presidential Primary of the Ruling APC  was conducted at the Eagles Square in Abuja.
